Program areas at Colorado Music Festival and Center for Musical Art

The Colorado Music Festival held an in-person Festival at chautauqua auditorium. Artistically, the Festival was a spectacular success, receiving major feature articles and positive reiews in the new york times and bbc Music. The live recording of cmf's world premiere performance of wang jie's flying on the scaly backs of our mountains was rebroadcast on npr's "performance today", reaching approximately 1.1 million listeners.do to a spike in covid-19 (delta variant) just as the Festival was starting in june and perhaps also due to price sensitivity related to a major increase in gas prices and general inflation, ticket sales were not as robust as anticipated and these deflated numbers carried into contributed revenue as well, in particular concert sponsorships. The orchestra, still under strict testing protocols, was able to contain the covid cases and many last- minute replacements were hired. As a result, the Festival was able to successfully deliver all concerts to the public, but at a higher cost than anticipated. Available seating was used to offer complimentary tickets to marshall fire victims as well as an increased number of veterans and isolated seniors through a deepening of our existing partnerships. Concert sponsorships remained soft as audiences continue to trickle back to pre-pandemic levels.
The Center for Musical Arts enjoyed one of the most successful years ever. The number of students served reached pre-covid numbers and ensembles started to meet in person again. A new cma concert series was launched with the goals to provide our students and general community the opportunity to attend performances of exceptional musicians from a variety of genres at accessible prices. The majority of offerings have been sold out and the series will continue into the future.the basement of the building suffered a major sewage flood in 2022 which resulted in unanticipated drywall and flooring replacement in and around the basement bathrooms as well as asbestos mitigation in an adjoining closet. Insurance covered much of the expense, but lessons were impacted for two weeks as the space was off-limits.advance 2023 sales and sponsorships are very promising, and cma early enrollment is strong. A successful fundraising initiative is underway to offset the losses incurred in 2022 as the organization analyzes all expenses and potential revenue, looking for ways to streamline expenses in ways that do not impact the quality of artistic and educational offerings.
