The season began with the digital premiere of the copper queen film. The film had a 9-day run at select harkins theaters in scottsdale and tucson in october 2021. The film was also made available via our new azo ondemand channel. It quickly won its first film festival award from the toronto international women film festival and was an official selection at the phoenix film festival in march 2022. In december 2021, azo returned to in-theater performances with the regional premiere of a new, holiday-themed mariachi Opera, el milagro del recuerdo, as part of the mcdougall red series. These performances were held at our traditional fall venues: the herberger theater center in phoenix and the temple of music and art in tucson. The season continued with in-theater performances of carmen, a little night music, and cosi fan tutte in the main stage series, taking place at symphony hall in phoenix and the tucson music hall (renamed recently as "linda ronstadt music hall"). The in-theater season concluded in april 2022, with education and community engagement programs extending through the remainder of the fiscal year. Despite anticipated lower demand for tickets as patrons contemplated returning to the theater, Arizona Opera successfully completed its entire season without canceling a single performance or replacing any performers due to illness. In addition, the Company also returned to in-person community and k-12 education programs in addition to its ongoing virtual offerings, reaching over 15,000 students across Arizona.
